Having recently received quite a bit of interest from New Zealand councils, we attended the ALGIM conference, an annual get-together for council IT managers and staff.
We believe SilverStripe is a fantastic fit for councils, given it is so important to update content continuously for the communities they serve. It helps to have a user-friendly CMS like ours, as it requires little training and allows non-technical staff to be very productive.
The SilverStripe concept offers a lot more freedom to councils, too: our company can build websites for you, we can train your in-house developers, or leave it entirely to you or other developers, since our software and documentation is free.
We’re seeing a large opportunity for councils to work together more, and use ideas like open source and open data constructively, rather than individually produce proprietary website features. This is especially relevant in building online services for rate-payers to engage with their councils and access the information held by them. These features cost a lot of time and money to build, and New Zealand councils would do well to come together for shared goals so they can match the innovation happening overseas.
See the video below and council websites for Redbridge and Bristol for an idea of where we’d like to see local councils head!
If you’re an interested council, read over our SilverStripe brochure for Councils, and please get in touch!
